The enormous New Bailey scheme will blur the line between the two cities more than ever before, with hundreds of new flats and huge swathes of space e shop burberry for businesses. Council chiefs want the New Bailey area to be the 'front door' to the city centre. A number of massive developments are underway along the River Irwell, which will see Manchester seamlessly merge into Salford. An interchange will be created to make travel between bus and train simpler. Pavements will be wider and made more attractive. Better pedestrian crossings will be created at the junction of Bloom Street and Chapel Street, where most people will enter the New Bailey area. A new taxi rank will be introduced on Gore Street. A 'central square' will be created at New Bailey's junction with Browncross Street, as well as another pedestrian crossing, and access to the train station will also be made easier. No money will be taken from town hall coffers. The New Bailey site covers the equivalent 21 football pitches 17.5 hectares and already includes a multi storey car park and a hotel. One New Bailey, a huge new office block, is also finished. Salford Central Station will have new platforms by 2019, which could see passenger numbers increase tenfold. Bosses say people will flow out from the station through the planned gateway area.
The Cross City bus package, which will improve travel into and across Manchester city centre, will also include New Bailey Street. Two new towers containing 500 flats are also set to be built a stone's throw from New Bailey Street and 1,000 apartments at Chapel Wharf. And on the northern side of Trinity Way, land is being cleared for a vast development of more than 2,000 new homes as part of the Middlewood Locks project.
