A Good Year for Mosquitoes According to recent reports on the CBC this summer is going to be a great one for mosquitoes.
The large amount of moisture we received this spring, combined with warm temperatures, means we can expect a high population of these insects. On the bright side they also suggested that the number of blackflies may be down due to the warm fall we experienced last year. However, based on the number of blackflies biting me while I was working in the wood pile this week I don't think we have to place them on the endangered species list quite yet. These pests are attracted to us for only one reason, they want our blood. They require protein from blood to develop their eggs. That is why usually only the females bite. The bites are inflicted by mouthparts which vary from species to species. Mosquitoes are particularly annoying to many people, and with good reason. They have a piercing and sucking mouth which works like a tiny hypodermic needle piercing blood vessels and capillaries near the skin surface and actually injecting an anti coagulant into the wound to prevent blood from clotting. Deer flies are equally annoying, at least to me. They are usually burberry mens bags outlet active on bright sunny days and will dive bomb your head as you try to fish. These flies have scissor like mouth parts which cut through skin. The burberry usa shop cutting action creates a pool of blood which the flies soak up with their mouth. Fortunately we have some defense against these pests, and one of the best is insect repellent. There are some excellent products on the market as well as a host of homemade concoctions. While I have found Avon's Skin So Soft fairly effective I have never tried a recipe suggested to me by an old angler on the St. Mary's River who used a mixture of coal tar and lard. Eating garlic is also supposed to be effective in repelling flies. These days there are also a wide variety of organic products developed to repel insects. A word of caution about fly dope and fishing gear, don't mix them. The active ingredient in most repellent is DEET, short for N,N diethyl meta toluamide burberry happy scarf and it is deadly on monofilament lines and fly lines. The higher the concentration of DEET the more damage results. If you can, use fly dope with a lower concentration of DEET and try to avoid getting it on your hands. Apply it with the back of your hand, or if you use the palm of your hands wash them before gearing up. If you are concerned about using chemicals on your skin consider burberry sale outlet uk a bug jacket or suit as an alternative.
There are some good products on the market. Mesh bug jackets work well as long as the mesh is kept away from your skin. A mosquito's mouth parts can extend some distance through mesh and still inflict a nasty bite.
